The basics: Theme backup

This is a good habit to have … before doing any changes to your theme, make a copy of it.

Tip: Another good habit is to never work on your live theme - make a copy of it (duplicate) and work on the copy. Shopify allows you to preview your work and publish it only when you are ready to show it to the world.

There are two easy ways of doing this in Shopify.

1. Just duplicate the theme in your Shopify admin. You can keep up to 20 themes, or different versions of the same theme in your account.

Go to Online store, click the Actions drop-down for your current theme and choose Duplicate.

That’s all!

You have a copy of your theme, to go back to.

2. The second option is to download a copy of your theme files to your computer.

Go to the same actions menu (Online store > Actions) and choose Download theme file.

You will receive an email with a link to download an archive containing all of your theme files in a zip archive, which can be uploaded to your store if you need it later.

Keep it save!

These are the easiest ways of keeping copies of your theme, but are not the only ways. If you want to do serious changes in your theme, you might want to look at Theme Kit. It allows you to work on your theme files using your choice of file editor and manage the source files in your preferred file versioning control system (Git, SVN, etc).
